Biography. Updated February, 2010
John learned very early on the astonishing experiences associated with the creation of music from both of his parents. His mother passionately played the piano, while his father avidly played the acoustic guitar. The balance of passion, creativity and desire was captured from an early age. John was first introduced to electronic music when he was seven years old. He would secretly listen to "The Electrifying Mojo" on 97.9 FM around 7pm in the early 80’s, after being tucked away for bed. He would roll his head back and forth to the sound of the beat, while swinging drum and high hat sounds with his hands in the air. His passion for music expanded, as these sounds opened up a whole new world for John. Throughout the next two decades John slowly built up studio equipment from a set of drums at age 11, to developing the full on recording studio that it is today. As he developed himself as an international DJ/Producer, John started in Detroit. 1999: Monthly appearances at The Shelter, Downtown Detroit, DJ Bileebob’s “Three Floors of Fun” 2000-2001: Weekly residency at “The Velvet Lounge” (aka Tonic), with Terrence Parker Weekly residency at "The Sky Club" Sunday night venue entitled "Overdose", with Thomas Barnett. John has also had countless appearances at some of Detroit’s hottest locations, including: "The Motor Lounge", "Oslo", "The Works", "Cork Town Tavern", "Foran's Irish Pub" and "The Lager House". In addition, John has played along side some of Detroit’s hometown legends with his remarkable and wholesome Deep House sets. These icons include Stacey Pullen, Mike Grant, Sean Deason, Mike Clark, Norm Talley, Delano Smith, Lee Curtiss, Seth Troxler, Reggie Dokes, Reggie Curry, and many others. In 2001 Redsoul Records was born and John’s imprint began its evolutionary cycle. The first release on Redsoul Records was from John himself, entitled "Melodic Melodies". This release was a huge hit and started getting international attention after being aired on Chuck Horn’s electronic music program on NPR (101.9 FM) in Detroit as well as Germany’s Lars Behrenroth’s “Deeper Shades of House” program. Shortly to follow, John’s DJ mix was aired on Italy’s “Love Nation” show (which reaches the ears of over a million listeners!). In 2004 John's minimal remix "The Final Shit" was released on Matrix Records, which also got much international attention, as well as his “The Funk Settlement” on the “African Diasporia” collection hosted by Cranbrook Art Museum. In 2007 John’s “Breakfast With Thorialanus” (Seth Troxler Feat. John Clees 7AM At The Coney Mix) was a huge success on the Unfoundsound Label. As the years continued, John went on to tour in Moscow with his hottest live performance to date. Stay tuned for more from this highly creative and talented man as we move into another year of exploration. Next Tour Dates TBA. -- The Box of Detreux |
